The Puppetoon Title Card
Puppetoons was a series of animated puppet films made in Europe in the 1930s and the United States in the 1940s by Hungarian born animator George Pal. They are memorable and notable for being one of the first uses of stop motion animation and for the use of replacement animation, using a series of different hand-carved wooden puppets for each part of the puppets bodies. The animations were first made as short films to promote Philip's Radio and other big name items sold in Europe at the time. Once moving to the U.S. in the 1940s, George Pal created and produced dozens of Peppetoon films for Paramount Pictures. Such as Tulips Shall Grow, Jasper and the Haunted House, John Henry, Olio for Jasper, and the famous animation of Tubby the Tuba.
Along with Noveltoons, ComiColor and Color Classics, Puppetoons have been in the public domain, allowing the crew of Shining Time Station to use in the television series for the song segments.
