Scare Dares is the second season premiere. It is the twenty-second episode of the series overall.

Plot

Prologue

Time has passed, as an older Matt and Tanya are writing to their cousins, Dan and Kara about how things have changed for the most part in the station. Stacy is still head of the station and is very happy, Harry has gone to work at Fort Farley, and a new engineer named Billy Twofeathers has taken his place in the workshop while Schemer remains the same. They also briefly mention Mr. Nicholas's visit from Tis a Gift, and that Mr. Conductor left with him to help at the north pole, but soon afterwards Mr. Conductor's cousin, also known as Mr. Conductor, came to Shining Time Station, and moved into the signalhouse. The two happily await for their cousins’ arrival.

Halloween Night

Kara, Matt and Tanya are all dressed and ready for Halloween while Dan is still wondering what to make for his costume, he looks around the station for ideas. As he does so, he and Kara meet Mr. Conductor who initially mistakes them for Tanya and Matt, and becomes afraid of them when he realizes they're different. But they reassure him that they want him around, he properly introduces himself to the kids and tells them a story about the time Percy played a ghostly trick on Thomas. Schemer is trying to make a quick buck by selling old rotten pumpkins by repainting them to make them look new. In true Halloween fashion Kara dares Dan to take a banana from Midge Smoot's hat and places it in Schemer’s pumpkin pile. Dan still can't find an idea for his costume and worries no one will like him if he's scared. Mr. Conductor comforts him letting him know he was scared of Dan until he got to know him.

That night the station is busy with children all in costumes and trick-or-treat bags. Kara, Matt, Tanya and Becky all arrive to meet Stacy but Dan is nowhere to be seen. Once Dan arrives he is pressured into pulling another dare this time involving Billy's workshop. Dan meets Billy who helps him with his costume after giving him some advice. He also shows Dan his wooden flute, carved to look like a bird, and tells of its origins. Meanwhile The Juke Box Band, who are also dressed for the night perform a song with Didi, or so they think as they find out the one singing was a real ghost. The kids return from trick or treating when Dan comes out of the workshop in his costume, scaring Kara, Matt, Tanya and Becky. After they offer him another dare he refuses taking Billy's advice to heart. Eventually all the kids get scared by Schemer who accidentally got his head stuck in a jack-o-lantern while trying to turn on the jukebox. After getting the jack-o-lantern off his head, Schemer says to himself that he doesn't believe in scary stuff, only to get scared off by Mr. Conductor who tricked him into thinking the pumpkin head came alive.
