The Picture Machine is based off the late 19th Century machine, the Mutoscope, an early film machine used in public locations, made as a cheaper alternative to the Kinetoscope. The Picture Machine, along with The Anything Tunnel and Mr. Conductor's Magic Bubble, served as the show's ways to show music videos filmed in live-action and animations, such as the Noveltoons, Walt Disney Animation Studios, Warner Bros. Animation, Universal Cartoon Studios, Fleischer Studios, and Comicolor cartoons.

The children would often use the picture machine to show said types of videos. Once, J.B. King used the picture machine as a step closer to find Mr. Conductor. Schemer also once used the picture machine.
